When Life Interrupts the Routine
Well, this past week did not go according to plan.
A couple of weeks ago, my family and I went to see Journey in concert. We had a great time! Everyone enjoyed themselves, and it was one of those family outings that made me think, We need to do more of this.
Apparently, we also brought home a souvenir.
The dreaded COVID.
It made its way through the house, and eventually it was my turn. And I have to tell you—I bedrotted to the max.
Writing? Nope.
Creative projects? Barely.
Keeping up with my normal routine? Absolutely not.
There was sleeping. There was scrolling. There was staring at things while lacking the energy or brainpower to actually do anything with them. There was a whole lot of I’ll deal with that later.
And you know what?
For once, I mostly let myself.
I’ve spent a lot of time over the past year trying to become more consistent with my writing and creative projects. I’ve worked hard at building routines around a full-time job, family life, and all the other things that have to fit into an ordinary week. So when something comes along and completely knocks that routine apart, there’s a little voice that starts whispering:
You’re falling behind.
But I’m starting to realize that consistency doesn’t mean never getting interrupted.
Life interrupts.
People get sick. Families need you. Work gets crazy. Plans change. Sometimes your body simply decides that whatever was on your carefully constructed to-do list is no longer up for discussion.
A bad week doesn’t erase all the good weeks that came before it.
The book will still be there.
The ideas will still be there.
Merravelle will apparently continue functioning without my supervision, although I hesitate to imagine what the CRM incident reports look like right now. LOL!
And the to-do list?
Oh, that isn’t going anywhere.
Today, I’m finally starting to feel more like myself again. It took a whole week! I’m not quite ready to declare myself triumphantly BACK and attack everything I’ve missed. I think I’m just going to ease my way into normal again.
Maybe that’s enough for this Sunday.
Sometimes progress looks like creating something new.
And sometimes progress is getting out of bed, making a cup of coffee, looking around at your slightly neglected little world and thinking:
Maybe, I should take a shower today.
Happy Sunday, everyone. ❤️
