Spring Cleaning

Spring is here.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and I’m getting the urge to purge.

This doesn’t happen every year. I’m not exactly what you’d call a neat-freak, but I’m not a complete slob either. I’m somewhere in the happy middle. But for some unknown reason, this year, I’ve been getting this nagging feeling to purge my electronic files. Yes, my files, not my house, but my PC drives. I’m a bit of pack-rat when it comes to my e-files. I don’t delete anything. So, what ends up happening is I have duplicate and triplicates files of lots of things.

The files are daunting to look at. If they were hardcopy files, I’d have mountains upon mountains of paper everywhere. It makes it so difficult to find anything. Plus, talk about all the storage space all those files are taking up. It’s like a closet in a home, eventually it fills up and all your stuff begins to spill over until you can’t close the closet doors anymore.

That’s about where I’m at with my e-files. So, with a large cup of coffee next to me and my favorite snack to fuel me on, I’ve started deleting the duplicates and triplicates from my drives. It actually feels pretty good. I’m cleaning up and getting more organized. This is one of my goals for this year as I get out of my comfort zone.

Cleaning up my e-files, makes room for other files to come in.

This is very spiritually symbolic for me. I’m ready to get rid of the clutter I don’t need and leave room for good things to come in.

Plus it’s just a good thing to do. As an author, I need to be more organized and efficient. It’s not really of value when I have to spend hours just trying to find the final-final copy of my book cover, or the final-final copy of the manuscript and wondering if that version is what I uploaded into Amazon. Now, with clearly labeled folders in my PC, I know exactly what I have and don’t have.

I can breathe a sigh of relief.

If you haven’t looked at your e-files in a while. I would recommend spring cleaning your e-files too. It’s amazing how good it feels to be de-cluttered 🙂

Veteran’s Day 2016

file7621263245344Happy Veteran’s Day. Today we honor those who served in the military. Because of these great men and women, our liberties have and continue to be protected.

I admire the courage and strength it takes to serve so selflessly. To know that by volunteering your name–you are leaving your family, your home, and have to go to someplace unknown; I know, I couldn’t do it. It takes the heart of a hero to do something so incredible.

That these amazing men and women would give up their comfort and their safety so that we may continue to have ours is humbling. They are my heroes.

All I have to say is THANK YOU!

Think and Grow Rich

napoleon-hill-mind-quotes-wallpaper-1030x643

I’ve had Think and Grow Rich in my library for a looong time. It’s one of those books that I’ve seen numerous times mentioned by successful people.

Mentions like, “I always carry it with me,” “It changed my life,” or “Amazing,” are just some of the descriptors I’ve associated with this book. So, my thought was ‘how good could it be?’

When I came upon it on Amazon.com and it was free, I had to grab it out of curiousity, but that was two years ago? Anyways, I’ve swiped through my library, see it, and swipe past. But something made me stop this time and actually download this 70+ year old work into my Kindle.

I’m so glad I did, cause WOW! Let me just say that I just started reading and I’m not finished, but I can’t get this guy’s lessons out of my head! If you like the Secret or are familiar with the book or movie or have heard of the Law of Attraction, this was the originator. At least in my opinion anyway. But it doesn’t just scratch the surface, he gives you actions steps and plans. He provides explanations and such wonderful stories to stress his point.

I also thought that I might have trouble reading writing from that time. Too formal? I thought I might fall asleep, but I haven’t. Napoleon Hill’s writing style is smooth, easy, and understandable. I kind of feel like I’m listening to a really eloquent uncle.

Napoleon Hill was teaching about success mindset and coupling action with desire 70+ years ago. The book was written right after the Great Depression. The American economy had taken a large hit and many people were ruined. People were desperate and hopeless. It was a time when it would have been easier to give up.

Although the book is old, reading it now — it’s still so relevant. Again, in my opinion, our situation now, may be a little bit better economically, but with so many wars, and general hatred being spewed all over the place… there’s the same sense of hopeless and desperation. It’s crazy. Anyways, that’s not really the point of this.

My point is that this book is a MUST READ for anyone who has a dream they’d like to accomplish and breathe into reality.

It is a classic, but more importantly, the work is eternal in its wisdom. Mr. Napoleon Hill’s words are alive and well in the 21st century and I am so grateful for it. I now understand all the accolades 🙂

If you want to pick it up, as of this post, it’s not free on Amazon.com, but it’s running for .99.

Here’s a link if you’re curious.

If not, search the web and I’m sure you can find a free .pdf of it somewhere 🙂

Happy reading!

Starting over

12_Angels_Publishing_1These last few months, I’ve been doing a lot, a lot of thinking. You see I got into self-publishing about three years ago in the fall of 2012. This November will mark my third year.

I wish I could say that I’ve experienced great success and I am but a breath away from reaching my goals of doing this full time. But sadly, the reality is, I’m no where close to that dream.

Yes, I am further than where I started, but my path has taken twists and turns that have  often left me confused and discouraged. At times, I’ve even felt taken advantage of. While there are many great people out there, unfortunately there are also a lot of bad ones and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in these three years is that I cannot be so trusting. Not everyone means what they say. Essentially, the saying “buyer beware!” is the golden rule to follow on the internet.

I am not posting this to feel sorry for myself. But rather, because I need to be honest with myself.

In the past three years, can I really say that I’ve put forth true, committed effort? No, I can’t.

Admitting that kills me, but I need that cold douse of water thrown at my face to wake me up. I need that honestly to scream at me, get in my face, and slap me upside the head. It pains me to admit that I’m failing in this endeavor because of… me.

I’ve even told myself that maybe writing isn’t for me. That I got into writing because my friend did. That I was nothing, but a hack and a phony. That I had no talent, no skill, nothing worthy enough to read.

So why, in my darkest moment, do I go back to writing? Why, when I’m thinking about the future, writing is a part of it? Why do I cringe when I think about putting down my pen permanently? I love to write. I’ve finally found a love that multiples my soul in so many ways and it doesn’t ask for anything back, but for me to keep at it.

In all this time, I have not been able to get away from myself or to get away from the fears that have always held me back. Why? I’m sitting here shaking my head because I don’t have a good reason. Even in the face of disaster, when this book business could have been my safety net, and my salvation, I didn’t do what had to be done. Why? Cause I’m an idiot, that’s why!

In the meantime, I see so many people that I started with rise to greatness. I feel lost and pushed behind their wake of success. You know like that salmon swimming upstream, only to die at the end or be eaten by a bear? That’s what it’s been feeling like.

Well, I’ve had enough. I’m done being afraid. Life is passing too quickly.

I may be more of a tortoise than a hare when it comes to finding my book success, but I will find it. The time has come for me to start anew. I’m not a sparkly new penny anymore. I’ve been tossed around, scratched, and have landed in dirt more times than I care to admit, but I’m still here.

This journey is not over and there’s more in store for me.

I believe there’s more in store for all of us, and we will each find our success, and see our dreams materialize in the best ways.

Abundance and joy to you.

My kindle library

file9531244575592Like most authors, I’m also an avid reader and yes, a book hoarder. My to-be read list grows by the week.

Do I have a slight problem? Yes, I believe I do. I have more books than I can read. I really don’t need to download any more, but something about 1-clicking on a kindle book… ahh. It’s therapeutic 🙂

So, I was actually looking through my kindle library searching for a book when I started to notice that my books of choice seem to fall in very certain categories:

  • Writing tips and how-to’s
  • Marketing
  • Self – publishing
  • Spirituality
  • Paranormal Fiction (Romance, Erotica, YA)
  • Wicca
  • Dreaming
  • Chakras & Energy & Crystals
  • Cookbooks

I’ve always had varied taste and the book categories above all make sense given my interests… all except Cookbooks. LOL! I don’t like to cook and I’m not much of a cook, but I still like to look. I have a lot of hardcopy cookbooks too. I think it’s the colorful pictures that attract me. I do love food.

But, the best part about all this? For all the books I have, the money I spend on e-books is so minimal. Self-pub authors are generous 🙂 Not only do authors often run free promos, but most books can be had for $2.99 or less! I can spend more on a latte.

Being that I’m an author myself, I like to support the community. It’s a good thing for me. I grow my collection, I learn, and I’m entertained. For the author, it’s good as well. They get sales, ranking, and a new reader.

Positivity all around. Support an indie today.

BB & B got a facelift!

file6831251040142Okay, changing the site’s look wasn’t exactly something I’d planned on. In fact, it wasn’t even a thought. But, technology had other ideas. I got a prompt to install an update on my last theme. So, I did. Didn’t really think much about it, until my whole site crashed!

Anyways, thanks to HostGator, my host server, they got me back up. Problem was, the old theme was no good. It got corrupted. I was so bummed! I really liked the way my old theme looked, but I couldn’t use it again. I had to scour for another theme and came across this one. I like it, it’s different from my old one and it will take some getting used to.

I’m a creature of habit and new things take time to sink in. I just hope this theme package works. Sheez! Gotta love technology. I may still look for something else, but I want to test run this theme for a bit and see how it goes.

I hope you like it!

Lesson? Yes, rather than pulling out your hair when things go ka-bloo-ey, try to go with the flow. It’s either that or you’re thrown with the blast anyway. Moving with the flow results in less scrapes and pain and more bounce.

Well, that’s it for now. Fingers crossed, my  new theme holds up 🙂

Free e-books

12_Angels_Publishing_2One of the things, I love to do on the weekends is to go through Amazon’s free e-books.  It gives me a passive activity that keeps me occupied for a few hours.  If you’ve never done this, I recommend trying it.

Here are the benefits of trolling through the free stuff.

  • FREE e-books!
  • Relaxing activity
  • If you pay attention and if you’re trying to learn about the book biz (like me), you’ll see what types of covers are popular, what types of titles are popular, and what the descriptions look like on those popular titles
  • You’ll learn your own trend and how you shop for e-books. I find that when I shop for free e-books, I don’t care so much about the reviews on a book.  I’m more willing to take a chance even on a low rated e-book.  I figure, what do I have to lose?
  • FREE e-books! I know I’ve already listed this benefit, but seriously being a bookaholic, free satisfies my need to add to my ever growing e-book collection.

I like to use my iPad for this, but you can’t use the Amazon app to search for freeMC900441397[1] e-books.  What happens is that the titles will show up, but you won’t be able to download.  You actually have to get into Amazon via the web.  I just use the Google app, type in Amazon.com and use the link that Google brings up.

Once you’re inside Amazon’s “store” just type in “free kindle e-books” in the search field and as if by magic all the free e-books appear before you. There’s usually 400 pages worth of free e-books.  I’ve never gone through all 400 pages and there is that part of me that wonders what I’m missing, but as much as I love Free, I just don’t have the fortitude to go through 400 pages!

Of course, you can narrow down your search, by adding keywords to your   search like free kindle ebooks “nonfiction” or “…romance”, or “…paranormal”. With specific keywords added to your search criteria, your options become more manageable.

Alrighty, that’s my tip this week. Check out the free stuff. You never know what gem you might find. I’ve discovered some great books/authors by doing this.

Happy searching!
