5 Second Rule
OMG! So, I recently took the plunge into audio books and got signed up with Audible. The incentive was — I got 30 days free and because I’m already a prime member, I also got 2 credits I could use to buy any audio books I want. The first book I chose was the 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins.
I freakin’ love this lady. I came across one of her post on Instagram (@melrobbins) and since then I’ve been following her. I resonate with what she says. She feels very real and genuine and, she doesn’t hold back. So, when I got an opportunity to listen to her book, you know I didn’t hesitate.
I LOVE, the 5 Second Rule. It’s so simple, but it is such a game changer and I’ve actually started using it. The 5 Second Rule is a tool to basically get yourself to do something that you may not feel like doing. It’s refocusing your brain to just do it, before your brain can talk you out of it.
For me, it’s about taking the stairs instead of the elevators at work. I pass by the stairs everyday. And everyday, I would tell myself, I should have taken the stairs. But, after I listened to the 5 Second Rule, I did it. I turned toward the stairs instead of walking straight for the elevator. I took that moment when I saw the stairwell and said, 5,4,3,2,1 here I go. Before I knew it I was climbing.
I did it before I could tell myself how tired I was. Or that I would be out of breath. Or that I might feel like dying by the time I got to my floor. Or that I was too out of shape.Nope, by the time I had time to think, I was already on my way up and too late to turn around.
I still hate climbing the stairs. I still feel like my lungs are on fire when I reach my floor. But, you know what some days, aren’t as bad. And once I catch my breath, I do feel a sense of accomplishment. I’ve even managed to ignore the giggles I get from co-workers as I huff and puff my way to my cubicle. Mostly, I think it’s because I’m too busy trying not to pass out, but regardless.
I give the 5 Second Rule a great big THUMBS UP! I am so thankful that Mel Robbins defined this tool and made it make sense. I really do feel, it’s getting me started towards good things! I don’t know what those things are yet, but I feel good about it! LOL!
I’ve simplified the 5 Second Rule in this post, but the book is worth a listen/read because it is packed with so much information. I often found myself nodding to things the author was saying, I was like, Yeah! I totally know what that’s like! Or, I didn’t know that. Seriously?
