LOVED IT!

My latest obsession is Audible. I LOVE audio books! It still boggles my mind that I didn’t catch on to this earlier. My kids say it’s because I’m a boomer and set it my ways. Uh hello! Not a boomer, but a stubborn Gen X. Yes, I’m slow to change, but I’m not opposed to it. And, I’m not afraid to say “I was wrong.”

With Audible, I was wrong. Audio books are a game changer. Also, I’m not being paid to say/write this. I wish they would though, LOL! I just really love what audio books have done to increase my “reading,”

On to my review. I listened to the audio version of High 5 Habit, by Mel Robbins. I also audibled her other book, 5 Second Rule. I gotta say, High 5 is just as terrific as 5 Second Rule. The author, who is also a renowned speaker has a way of putting things into perspective. Plus, what I really like is that she researches the science behind what she’s teaching. The other great thing is that her strategies are simple and can be implemented instantly.

Yes, there’s a physical “effort,” that is required, but behind the simple act, there is a profound mental shift that happens. In the case of the High 5 Habit, the act is to high 5 yourself in the morning. Simple, right? Yes! But the magic that happens mentally and emotionally (according to the author’s science research) is that the simple act makes us feel supported.

I’m sure you’ve heard this before — our brains, don’t know the difference between real and imaginary. So, in a case of a high 5, we’ve grown up associating the gesture as positive, as celebratory, as congratulatory, as supportive. All good things. The high 5 makes us feel good. So, if we high 5 ourselves, our brains don’t care that it’s not coming from a separate person. Our brain registers the high 5 as something being given to us and so we get the good, happy feels when it’s done.

I will admit that this sounded a little too cheesy for me. But, I figure I have nothing to lose if I try. So, I did. And well… I’m on day 3 of high 5ing myself and I gotta admit, it feels ok. I’m still feeling cheesy, but I think it’s also because I’m not used to giving myself credit. By doing this, I’m slowly shifting. I can feel it. It’s ok to acknowledge myself. And that’s the magic Ms. Mel Robbins is talking about in the book.

There’s more to this book than just about the high 5. What the book really teaches is the attitude behind the high 5. That attitude is a way to change things in yourself, and then in your life. It’s a tool to get your mind working for you, to benefit you! Meaning instead of wallowing in the mucky self deprecating pond of negativity we all do, this tool… the high 5… will get you out of that stink hole.

After day 3 of supporting myself mentally and emotionally through the high 5, I’m not conquering the world (yet), but I’m feelin’ good! And for that I am grateful.

Would I recommend this book? Yes. A 1000% yes.
