Three Stories. One Question. (by Cecily Magnon)

When I first began writing The Forsworn Chronicles, I thought I was creating three separate fantasy stories.

Each would have its own world. Its own mythology. Its own characters. Its own beginning and ending. And in many ways, that’s exactly what they became.

Oathbreaker draws inspiration from Irish mythology and asks what happens when loyalty and compassion collide.

The Final Concord explores fallen angels and questions whether even the best systems can lose sight of the people they’re meant to protect.

The Last Flame looks to djinn lore and reminds us that sometimes the smallest light is the one worth protecting most.

Different worlds.

Different legends.

Different heroes.

But somewhere along the way, I realized they were all asking the same question.

What do we do when doing the right thing comes with a cost?

None of these stories have perfect heroes. They aren’t chosen because they’re the strongest. They’re ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances, forced to choose between duty and conscience, tradition and compassion, certainty and hope.

I think that’s why I was drawn to write them. Fantasy may give us magical worlds and mythical beings, but the choices our characters make are deeply human. The worlds change. The questions don’t.

Now that all three books have found their place in The Forsworn Chronicles, I can finally step back and see the larger picture.

These stories aren’t really about magic. They’re about courage. They’re about sacrifice. They’re about redemption. And perhaps most of all, they’re about the quiet hope that even one person can make a difference.

As I look ahead to future projects, I know those themes will continue to shape the stories I tell. There are more characters and places waiting to be explored. More myths waiting to be reimagined. More impossible choices waiting to test ordinary people.

The journey is far from over.

If anything, it feels like it’s only just beginning.

Thank you to everyone who has read one story, all three stories, or simply followed along on this adventure.

Your encouragement means more than you know.

Here’s to the next story.

And the next world waiting just beyond the page.

Have you read any of the Forsworn Chronicles yet? I’d love to know which story—or which theme—resonated with you the most.
