When a Little Story Finds Its Readers
When I released Oathbreaker, I really didn’t know what to expect.
It was the first story in the Forsworn Chronicles, a collection I created for stories about broken vows, impossible choices, old promises, and the people who have to live with the consequences.
One of the things I’ve been experimenting with through 12 Angels Publishing is the idea that a story doesn’t have to be enormous to be worth publishing. Sometimes I want a 400-page fantasy I can disappear into for days. And sometimes? I don’t.
That’s what I wanted the Forsworn Chronicles to be — a collection of short fantasy stories that can be read in a day.
Oathbreaker is short and was never meant to be a sprawling fantasy novel. Just one story I wanted to tell and the kind of quick read I would want as a reader.
So watching it slowly find readers and seeing those readers take the time to leave such kind reviews — has meant so much more to me than I could even express. At the moment, Oathbreaker has earned six reviews, with ratings sitting in that lovely 4.5–5 star range. (Yippee!! happy dance, happy dance!)
Six might not sound like a huge number in the publishing world. But when you’re an indie author building a tiny publishing house one book at a time — six is huge!
That means six people chose my story, read it, and then took a few minutes out of their day to tell someone else they enjoyed it! Whaaat?! That’s freakin’ fantastic!
Since Oathbreaker, I’ve released two more stories in the collection, but Oathbreaker will always be the one that went first.
The little story that tested the waters.
Thank you to everyone who has read, rated, reviewed, or simply given one of my stories a chance.
